Here in Italy, we now have good reason to feel very fortunate and optimistic about the coming months. As a result, we wanted to update you and your students about our plans for the fall in terms of access to teaching.
The nation’s management of the pandemic seems to have gotten the spread of the disease under control, and with every passing day, more and more Italians – including university students – are getting vaccinated. As of today, 54% of the population has received at least one dose of an approved vaccine, so we hope to be well on the way to herd immunity by October.
As a result, we now feel we can plan to give your students what they expected when they imagined studying at university: the chance to be in the classroom with their professors lecturing in person, sharing a physical and intellectual space with their peers. Our current plan – if the situation in Italy continues to improve as it appears it will – is to get everyone back in the lecture hall and off the internet. (The Foundation Year is an exception; you can read about the plans for its teaching on the programme’s website.)
As a result, we encourage you to push your students to plan to be here in Italy at the beginning of September. If they require a study visa, be sure to have them carry out the pre-enrolment on the Universitaly platform as soon as they receive an enrolment eligibility letter.
However, we are pleased to say that if your students prove unable to arrive in Italy for the beginning of the academic year due to travel or visa issues, we will guarantee remote access to fall classes, likely in the form of lecture recordings posted online after the fact. As a result, they can rest easy knowing that they will be able to begin their studies regardless of where they happen to be in the first months of the academic year.
That said, if COVID-19 surprises us again in the coming months, which we have learned is entirely possible, then in September we may still need to maintain social distancing measures. In this event, we will continue to use the equal-opportunity reservation system we have successfully employed this year, allowing our students to reserve spots in the classroom while also providing online access to lectures – again, likely in the form of recordings posted after the fact – for those students unable to attend them in person.
We hope that your students are looking forward to settling into their seats in the classroom this fall! Mark your calendar: classes begin on September 6 for programmes in Languages, and on September 13 for all other study areas!
